Best Cat Water Fountains
Fountain listings often say running water makes cats drink more. The research is less clear: the controlled studies we found had mixed results, and none found more dilute urine with a fountain.
Some individual cats drink more from fountains [4] or show a bowl preference [2]. We picked three well-rated fountains and summarize the studies below, so you know what a fountain can and can't do.

How we picked
We searched Amazon for cat water fountains and read the top organic results. We rejected listings with a perfect score from a single rating, a thin new listing with seven ratings, and anything rated under 4 out of 5. We kept fountains with thousands of ratings and chose three designs: all-plastic, stainless-topped and cordless.

Do fountains make cats drink more?
The evidence is mixed. In a small 2010 study (13 healthy indoor cats enrolled, 12 completed), measured water intake was higher from a fountain. The author noted that splashing and evaporation may have inflated that measurement, the cats' urine was no more dilute, and the author concluded the fountain failed to substantially increase intake or dilute urine [1].
A 2019 study of 14 laboratory cats compared still, circulating and free-falling water bowls and found no difference in daily intake by bowl type, though three individual cats showed preferences [2]. A 2026 scoping review of the research on cat water intake concluded that water source type, static or flowing, did not affect intake [3].
Cornell's Feline Health Center puts it this way: some cats drink more from fountains, but individual preferences vary. It also names feeding wet food, or adding water to food, as another good way to increase intake [4].
Our take: buy a fountain because your cat likes it, not as a medical fix. If your vet wants your cat drinking more, ask about wet food.

The Veken C1 Classic holds 95 oz (2.8 L) according to its title, and offers two flow modes: a flower waterfall and a gentle fountain. The listing describes a five-stage filter with coconut-shell activated carbon, a blue LED water-level window and a switch on the cord for the light.
The box includes the pump with a 6-foot cord, an adapter, two filters, two pre-filter sponges, a silicone mat and a brush. The listing recommends cleaning the pump and replacing filters every one to two weeks, and never running it dry.

It ships with three carbon filters, a foam pre-filter and a silicone mat, so you won't need replacement filters right away. The listing says the pump runs below 40 dB and has an LED light, with a window for checking the water level.

The Dockstream 2 is battery-powered, so you can put it away from an outlet. The listing claims up to a month per charge. It holds 3 liters in a detachable tank, and the drinking tray is stainless steel.
It connects over 5 GHz Wi-Fi to PETLIBRO's app, which the listing says uses a built-in scale to track drinking. PETLIBRO describes the design as pump-free with no wires in the water, and a four-layer filter.

What to look for
Easy to clean
Fountains need regular cleaning. Veken advises cleaning the pump and changing filters every one to two weeks. In our view, fewer parts and dishwasher-safe pieces help.
Bowl material
As a practical tip, VCA says cats generally prefer glass, metal or ceramic bowls over plastic [5]. A stainless top or tray is a middle ground.
Noise and light
Quietness claims are the brands' own. VCA suggests placing water somewhere quiet [5].
