Best Dog Cooling Mats for Hot Weather

The Green Pet Shop gray pressure-activated cooling pad for dogs (opens Amazon in a new tab)

A dog cooling mat is a comfort item for warm days, not a treatment for heatstroke. Our pick for most dogs is The Green Pet Shop Cool Pet Pad, a gel pad that works when your dog lies on it and needs no water, power or freezer. If you want something you can put in the washer, the Bedsure ArcticMax is a thin cool-touch fabric mat, and the Cozyide mat is reversible for year-round use.

We didn't find any study showing cooling mats prevent heatstroke. Shade, fresh water, air conditioning and limiting exercise in the heat are what the AKC, VCA and ASPCA advise [1][2][3].

How we picked

We searched Amazon for dog cooling mats, skipped sponsored results, and chose two kinds: a pressure-activated gel pad and cool-touch fabric mats. We left out raised cot beds, which we cover in our elevated dog bed guide. One gel mat we considered wasn't available through our product-image source, so it isn't included.

Product details come from each Amazon listing on the day we checked. Heat-safety advice comes from the AKC, VCA Animal Hospitals, the ASPCA and AVMA News [1][2][3][4].

What vets say about dogs and heat

Do cooling mats work? The only controlled study we found tested nine working dogs after exercise. A mat chilled to about 39°F (4°C) cooled them faster than fans alone, but a water bath was faster still [5]. That was a refrigerated mat, not a self-cooling pad like our picks, and the study didn't test prevention. The AKC, VCA and ASPCA heat-safety pages we read don't mention cooling mats at all.

Who's most at risk. The AKC lists puppies, seniors, overweight dogs and dogs with conditions such as heart disease, and says short-snouted breeds need extra caution [1]. VCA says flat-faced breeds can overheat in only moderately warm, humid weather [2]. AVMA News reports insurance-claims data showing brachycephalic dogs had about four times the heatstroke rate of other dogs [4].

Warning signs. Early signs listed by the AKC include heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums and tongue, and hot skin. Pale or bluish gums, tremors and collapse are signs of a severe case [1].

If you suspect heatstroke. Move your dog somewhere cool, wet it with cool (not ice-cold) water and use a fan, then get to a vet. VCA calls heatstroke a medical emergency and says not to cover a dog with wet towels, which hinders cooling [2]. AVMA News reports that ice water can cause blood vessels to constrict and shivering [4].

1Best Overall

The Green Pet Shop Cool Pet Pad, Extra Large

Sold by Firefly Buys, ships from Amazon.

The Cool Pet Pad uses a gel the brand says is activated by your pet's weight, so there's nothing to fill, plug in or freeze. When your dog gets up, the listing says the pad recharges on its own after 15 to 20 minutes of non-use.

It folds and is light enough to move between the floor, the sofa, a crate or the car, per the listing. Care is simple: wipe it with a damp cloth. Keep it out of direct sun, which the brand says affects how well it works.

Good to know

  • No water, electricity or refrigeration
  • Recharges after 15–20 min off the pad, says the brand
  • Folds for travel and crates

Keep in mind

  • Weight guidance conflicts: the title says "from 80+ lbs" but the spec says up to 80 lb
  • The listing doesn't give the pad's dimensions; check the size chart
  • Wipe-clean only, not machine washable
2Best Washable Mat

Bedsure ArcticMax Cooling Mat for Large Dogs, 41"

Sold by Bedsure Comfy Pet, ships from Amazon.

Gel pads have to be wiped clean. The ArcticMax is fabric, so it can go in the washer and in the dryer on low heat, per the listing. Bedsure says its Q-Max > 0.5 fabric feels cool as soon as your dog lies down; there's no gel, water or plug.

It's 41 by 28 inches and half an inch thick, with a non-slip dotted underside, and the listing says it is certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. Bedsure lists a maximum weight recommendation of 80 pounds for this size.

Good to know

  • Machine washable; dryer safe on low
  • Non-slip dotted base
  • OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 listed

Keep in mind

  • It's a cool-to-the-touch fabric, not a refrigerated mat
  • Only 0.5 in thick, so it adds little cushioning
  • "Q-Max" is a fabric-feel figure the brand cites, not a measure of heat removed
3Best Reversible Mat

Cozyide Dog Cooling Mat, 40" x 28"

Sold by cozyide, ships from Amazon.

The Cozyide is double-sided: a nylon cooling fabric on the surface and 500gsm cotton filling inside, with quilting to keep it flat, per the listing. Its spec describes it as keeping pets cool in summer and warm in winter, so it can stay down all year.

It's 40 by 28 inches and an inch thick, and weighs under 2 pounds. Cozyide says to machine wash it in a laundry bag and hang it to dry rather than tumble drying.

Good to know

  • Reversible, for year-round use
  • About 1 in thick with cotton filling
  • Light (1.87 lb) and packable

Keep in mind

  • Sizing is unclear: the title says for small dogs, the spec says large and extra large
  • Hang dry only
  • Claims of being veterinarian-approved and chew-resistant are Cozyide's; we could not verify them

What to look for

Gel or fabric

Gel pads need no washing machine and recharge between uses; fabric mats are thinner and go in the washer.

Size to your dog

Your dog should be able to stretch out on it. Compare the listed size with your dog lying down.

Chewers

If your dog chews bedding, supervise it on any mat; gel pads and fabric can both be damaged.

Keep it in the shade

Direct sun warms any mat. The Green Pet Shop says sun affects its pad's performance.

The bottom line

  • Best Overall: The Green Pet Shop Cool Pet Pad: a gel pad that needs no water, power or freezer.
  • Best Washable Mat: The Bedsure ArcticMax goes in the washer and dryer.
  • Best Reversible Mat: The Cozyide has a cool side and a quilted fill for year-round use.

Questions pet parents ask

Do dog cooling mats really work?

They can help a dog feel cooler, but the evidence is thin. The one controlled study we found used a refrigerated mat after exercise; it cooled dogs faster than fans but slower than a water bath [5]. We found no study showing cooling mats prevent heatstroke.

Can a cooling mat prevent heatstroke?

Don't rely on one. The AKC, VCA and ASPCA advise shade, fresh water, air conditioning and avoiding over-exercise in the heat, and never leaving a dog in a parked car [1][2][3].

What are the signs of heatstroke in dogs?

The AKC lists heavy panting, rapid breathing, drooling, bright red gums and tongue and hot skin as early signs, and pale or bluish gums, tremors and collapse as severe signs [1]. Treat it as an emergency and call your vet.

Should I put a cooling mat in the freezer?

Our picks don't need it. The Green Pet Shop says its gel pad needs no refrigeration, and the two fabric mats are designed to feel cool on contact.

Which dogs need extra care in hot weather?

Short-snouted breeds, puppies, seniors, overweight dogs and dogs with heart or breathing problems, according to the AKC, VCA and ASPCA [1][2][3].

Can I wash a dog cooling mat?

Fabric mats usually, gel pads usually not. Bedsure says its mat is machine washable and dryer safe on low; Cozyide says machine wash in a bag and hang dry; The Green Pet Shop says to wipe its pad with a damp cloth.
