Best Heated Cat Beds for Indoor Cats
The best heated cat bed for most homes is the K&H Thermo-Snuggle Cup, a soft-sided cup bed with a low-wattage heater that only warms when a cat is in it. If you would rather not plug anything in, the K&H Self-Warming pad uses a plush layer that reflects the cat's own body heat and has no cord at all. If you want to set a temperature and a shut-off time yourself, the INVENHO donut bed has an LED controller with 11 settings and a 1 to 24 hour timer.
A heated bed is a comfort item, not a treatment. The AVMA says heated pet mats can still cause burns and should be used with caution, and that pets need several safe sleeping spots so they can move toward or away from the warmth [1]. We found no veterinary source that gives a safe surface temperature for heated cat beds, so safety claims in this guide are the makers' own.

How we picked
We searched Amazon for heated cat beds, set aside sponsored results, and read the listings of the beds that came up most often. We chose one of each kind: a plug-in bed with a pet-activated thermostat, a self-warming pad with no electricity, and a plug-in bed with a manual temperature control and timer. We did not include heated outdoor shelters. For raised resting spots, see our cat tree guide and our window perch guide; for a hiding spot that is not heated, see our cat tunnel guide.
Every product detail comes from the Amazon listing on the date we checked it. Advice on warmth, sleeping spots and resting places comes from the AVMA, the ASPCA, the AAFP/ISFM environmental needs guidelines as summarized by VCA Animal Hospitals, and a veterinary enrichment paper by Herron and Buffington [1][2][3][4].
What vets say about warm sleeping spots
Heated mats need care. The AVMA's cold-weather guidance says heated pet mats can still cause burns, so use them with caution. It also says to give pets several safe sleeping spots so they can move toward more or less warmth as they choose [1]. In practice that means a heated bed should be one option among several, never the only bed in the house.
Off the floor, away from drafts. The ASPCA says every pet should have a warm sleeping spot that is off the floor and away from drafts [2]. The AAFP/ISFM guidelines, as summarized by VCA, call resting places a key resource for cats: provide at least two options, give each cat its own, and expect many cats to prefer raised spots [3].
Soft beats hard. Herron and Buffington's enrichment paper says cats prefer soft, comfortable resting spots such as cushions or fleece beds, and that several resting, perching and hiding spots reduce competition in multi-cat homes [4]. All three beds here are soft; the K&H Self-Warming pad can also be dropped into a bed or perch your cat already likes.
What we could not find. We found no veterinary source giving a safe surface temperature for a heated cat bed, and no source showing that heated beds help cats with arthritis. Where a listing describes a bed as safe or therapeutic, that is the maker's claim. The AVMA notes that arthritic and senior pets may have more trouble regulating their temperature [1], so if your cat is old or stiff, ask your vet before relying on a heated bed.
K&H Thermo-Snuggle Cup Bomber Heated Cat Bed, 18 x 14 in
Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.
This is the bed to get if you want warmth without having to think about it. The heater is a 4-watt unit with a pet-activated thermostat, per the listing: it warms only when the cat is in the bed, and when the bed is empty the surface stays at or just above room temperature. K&H points out that this means it will not always feel warm to the touch, which is by design, not a fault.
The sidewalls are soft and floppy, so a cat can drape over the edge, and the listing sizes it for larger cats and small dogs at 18 by 14 inches. The heater pulls out for machine washing and for the warmer months. K&H says the whole product is safety listed and that its standards go beyond UL requirements; that is K&H's claim, and we did not find an outside source to confirm it.
Good to know
- Pet-activated thermostat; 4-watt heater
- Heater removes for washing and summer
- Soft sides at 18 x 14 x 7 in
Keep in mind
- The surface stays near room temperature when empty, so don't judge it by hand
- The safety-listed claim is the maker's; the AVMA says any heated mat can still cause burns [1]
- It is a cup shape with 7 in sides; cats that like to sprawl flat may prefer a pad
K&H Self-Warming Cat Bed Pad, Small 21 x 17 in
Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.
If you don't want a cord anywhere near your cat, or you want warmth in a spot with no outlet, this pad has no electronics at all. K&H says its plush material reflects the cat's own body heat back, so it feels warmer than a plain pad once the cat has settled in. It cannot overheat because it makes no heat of its own.
At 21 by 17 inches and one inch thick, it is a flat pad rather than a bed, which is its strength: the listing says it fits on furniture, inside an existing bed or in a crate, and both plush sides can face up. It is machine washable and comes with one year of manufacturer's coverage, per the listing.
Good to know
- No electricity or cord
- Reversible; fits in a bed, crate or on a perch
- Machine washable; 21 x 17 in
Keep in mind
- K&H notes a slight crinkle sound that may put off noise-sensitive cats
- Adds no heat of its own, so it will not help an empty bed feel warm
- Only 1 in thick; pair it with a cushioned bed for an older cat
INVENHO 20 in Donut Heated Cat Bed with Timer and Adjustable Temperature
Sold by DogJog, ships from Amazon.
This is the pick if you want to decide how warm the bed gets and when it turns off. The LED controller offers 11 temperature settings from 80 to 130°F, per the listing, and a timer that shuts the heater off after anywhere from 1 to 24 hours. The bed itself is a 20-inch sherpa donut with a 6-inch raised rim, the kind many cats curl into.
The listing describes a chew-resistant spiral cord cover, a 7-layer heating pad with what it calls UL-certified heating wire, a waterproof flame-retardant PVC envelope and a built-in temperature sensor against overheating. Those are INVENHO's descriptions, not something we could check. The heater comes out so the bed can go in the washer.
Good to know
- 11 settings and a 1 to 24 hour timer
- Removable heater; bed is machine washable
- 6 in raised rim at 20 x 20 in
Keep in mind
- Top setting is 130°F. We found no veterinary safe-temperature figure; we suggest starting at the lowest setting and supervising
- Weight guidance is unclear: the listing says for pets "over 15 pounds", which reads like it should say "up to"; ask the seller
- The cord cover, heating wire and sensor claims are the maker's

What to look for
How the heat is controlled
A pet-activated thermostat warms only when the cat is there. A manual controller lets you choose, but also lets you choose too high. Self-warming pads have no heat to control.
A removable heater
Both plug-in beds here have heaters that come out so the bed can go in the washer, and the self-warming pad has nothing to remove. Check the listing before buying another bed; a sealed heater means spot cleaning only.
More than one bed
The AVMA says to give pets several safe sleeping spots so they can move away from warmth [1], and the AAFP/ISFM guidelines say at least two resting options per cat [3].
Placement
The ASPCA says a warm spot off the floor and away from drafts [2]. A heated bed on a cat tree shelf or a window perch meets both; keep the cord out of chewing reach.
The bottom line
- Best Overall: The K&H Thermo-Snuggle Cup: a 4-watt pet-activated heater in a soft cup bed, with the heater removable for washing.
- Best No-Electricity Option: The K&H Self-Warming pad reflects body heat, has no cord, and fits in beds and crates.
- Best with Timer and Temperature Control: The INVENHO donut bed has 11 settings and a 1 to 24 hour shut-off; start low and supervise.
Questions pet parents ask
Are heated cat beds safe?
The AVMA says heated pet mats can still cause burns and should be used with caution, and that pets need several sleeping spots so they can move away from the heat [1]. We found no veterinary source giving a safe surface temperature. Makers describe their own safety features; treat those as the maker's claims, keep cords out of reach, and check the bed regularly.
Why does my K&H heated bed feel cold?
That is how it is designed. K&H says the Thermo-Snuggle Cup's thermostat only warms when a cat is in the bed; when it is empty, the surface sits at or just above room temperature, so it will not feel warm to your hand.
What temperature should a heated cat bed be?
We could not find a veterinary answer. The INVENHO bed's listing offers settings from 80 to 130°F; we suggest using the lowest setting that your cat chooses to lie on, and watching for your cat leaving the bed to cool off. A pet-activated bed like the K&H cup takes the decision out of your hands.
Do heated beds help cats with arthritis?
We found no veterinary source showing that they do. The AVMA does note that arthritic and older pets may struggle to regulate their temperature [1], so a warm, soft spot may be welcome; ask your vet about your own cat.
Can I leave a heated cat bed on all the time?
The K&H cup is built to stay plugged in, since its heater only runs when a cat is in it, per the listing. The INVENHO bed has a 1 to 24 hour auto shut-off. Whatever bed you use, the AVMA says to give your cat other sleeping spots so it is never stuck on a warm surface [1].
Where should I put a heated cat bed?
