Best Dog Gates for the House
(opens Amazon in a new tab)The best dog gate for most homes is a steel walk-through gate you can mount with pressure or hardware, like the Cumbor auto-close gate. If you can't install anything, a freestanding gate such as the PETMAKER 3-panel works for small dogs. If a cat shares the house, the Babelio gate has a small door the cat can use while the dog stays put.
Before you buy, decide where the gate goes. The AKC says hardware-mounted gates are generally the safest choice at the top of a staircase, and that freestanding gates are the least secure type [1].

How we picked
We searched Amazon for dog gates, set aside sponsored results, and read the listings of the gates that came up most often. Many dog gates are sold as baby gates too; we kept ones that name dogs or pets in the title. We chose one gate of each main type: pressure or hardware mounted, freestanding, and a gate with a pet door.
Every product detail comes from the Amazon listing on the date we checked it. Advice on gate types, height and placement comes from the AKC [1][2], Humane World for Animals [3] and child-safety guidance from the CPSC and Nationwide Children's Hospital [4][5].
What the AKC and safety groups say about gates
Three types. The AKC sorts dog gates into pressure-mounted (no tools, renter-friendly), hardware-mounted (screwed or bracketed to the wall, the most secure) and freestanding (the least secure) [1].
Top of the stairs. The AKC says a hardware-mounted gate is generally the safest choice at the top of a staircase [1]. Child-safety guidance agrees: the CPSC says to use only gates that screw to the wall at the top of stairs [4], and Nationwide Children's Hospital says pressure-mounted gates aren't recommended there because they can be knocked over [5].
Height. The AKC says a gate of about 20 inches may be enough for puppies and small breeds, while bigger dogs and jumpers generally need one at least 30 inches tall. It also suggests checking that nearby furniture won't give your dog a boost over the top [1].
Using one with a puppy. The AKC suggests puppy-proofing one room and using baby gates to keep your puppy there when you can't watch it, then widening its territory as it earns more freedom [2]. Humane World for Animals suggests the same kind of small, gated area while a puppy is still being house-trained [3].
Cumbor 30-46" Auto Close Dog Gate
Sold by Cumbor, ships from Amazon.
This is the gate to get if you walk through it many times a day. Cumbor says the door closes behind you, and its description says the hinge can also lock open at 90 degrees when you want it to stay open. The latch is a double-lock design you open with one hand.
It fits openings from 30 to 46 inches and stands 30.5 inches tall, per the listing. You can pressure-mount it in a doorway or hallway with no tools, or use the hardware option for stairs, which is what the AKC recommends at the top of a staircase [1]. Two Y-bolt adapters for stair openings and a ramp accessory for the bottom bar are included.
Good to know
- Auto-close door; can lock open at 90°
- Pressure or hardware mounting
- Steel frame; fits 30 to 46 in
Keep in mind
- There's a bottom bar to step over; the listing suggests checking your threshold
- At 30.5 in tall it just clears the AKC's 30-inch guide for jumpers; a 36 in tall size is also listed
- Sold as a baby gate too, so most photos show children
PETMAKER 3-Panel Freestanding Dog Gate, 54" x 24"
Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.
If you rent, or want a gate you can move from room to room, a freestanding gate needs no installation at all. The PETMAKER is three hinged wood-and-metal panels that stand in an accordion shape across openings 33 to 46 inches wide, per the listing.
It weighs 6.3 pounds and folds to 18 by 3 by 24 inches for storage, so it fits in a closet or the car. The listing describes it as sturdy enough for a small dog, puppy or cat, and its spec lists small and medium breeds.
Good to know
- Nothing to install
- Folds to 18 × 3 × 24 in
- Light enough to move daily (6.3 lb)
Keep in mind
- Only 24 in tall, below the AKC's 30-inch guide for jumpers
- Freestanding gates are the least secure type, the AKC says; not for stairs
- The listing says it is for pets only, not children
Babelio CatPrivilege III Dog Gate with Cat Door, 29-43"
Sold by Babelio, ships from Amazon.
Gating off the dog often means gating off the litter box or the cat's food too. This Babelio gate has a 7 by 5.8 inch pet door with three settings, so a cat can pass through while a bigger dog can't. It's 30 inches tall and fits 29 to 43 inches with the included extensions.
Babelio lists it as pressure-mounted with no drilling, but it also ships with screws and drywall anchors if you want to hardware-mount it. The main door auto-closes or stays open, and the listing describes a triple-lock latch and a steel frame it says can withstand 210 pounds of impact.
Good to know
- Built-in cat door with 3 settings
- Pressure mount, with screws included for hardware mounting
- Walk-through door auto-closes
Keep in mind
- Babelio describes it as a barrier for medium-sized pets
- A small dog may fit through the cat door, so measure your dog
- The 210-lb impact figure is Babelio's claim

What to look for
Where it goes
Top of the stairs: hardware-mounted only [1][4]. Doorways and hallways: pressure-mounted is fine. Open rooms or rentals: freestanding.
Height for your dog
About 20 inches can work for puppies and small breeds; jumpers and big dogs generally need 30 inches or more, the AKC says [1].
Measure twice
Measure the opening at the top and the bottom. Cumbor's listing suggests the same, because openings aren't always square.
A door you'll actually use
If you pass through many times a day, a walk-through door that closes on its own saves a lot of climbing over.
The bottom line
- Best Overall: The Cumbor auto-close gate: steel, walk-through, and it can be hardware-mounted at the top of the stairs.
- Best Freestanding: The PETMAKER 3-panel needs no installation and folds away; best for small dogs.
- Best for Homes with Cats: The Babelio CatPrivilege III lets the cat through and keeps the dog out.
Questions pet parents ask
Can I use a pressure-mounted gate at the top of the stairs?
How tall should a dog gate be?

What kind of dog gate is best for renters?
A pressure-mounted gate or a freestanding one. Pressure-mounted gates need no tools, the AKC notes [1]; freestanding gates like the PETMAKER need no installation at all but are the least secure type.
Can a dog gate help with house-training?
How do I keep the dog out but let the cat through?
Choose a gate with a small pet door, like the Babelio CatPrivilege III, and check that your dog is too big to fit through the opening.
