Best Pet Odor Eliminator: Sprays and a Gel for Every Surface

Two amber spray bottles of home cleaner on a counter

Match the odor product to the surface. For tile, hardwood, laminate and sealed concrete, Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator is an orange-oil spray its listing describes for urine, feces and vomit odors on hard, sealed surfaces. For carpet, rugs, upholstery and bedding, Zep Air and Fabric Odor Eliminator is a fabric spray. For a room that just smells like pets, Arm & Hammer Pet Scents Odor Eliminator Gel Beads sit in a jar and need no spraying, plugs or batteries.

Two honest limits before you buy. A spray will not fix urine that has soaked into carpet and padding; that needs an enzyme cleaner and some blotting, which we cover in our pet stain remover picks and how to get dog pee out of carpet. And if the smell is coming from your dog, the AKC says skin and ear infections are the most common medical reasons, so a vet visit may do more than any spray [1].

How we picked

We searched Amazon for pet odor eliminators, set aside sponsored results, and read the listings of the products that came up most often. We chose one product for each job: hard floors, fabrics, and the general air of a room. Urine soaked into carpet is a different problem, and the enzyme cleaners for it are in our pet stain remover guide. If you have a cat, odor from the box starts with the litter; see our cat litter for odor control picks. For airborne dander rather than smells, see our air purifier guide.

Every product detail comes from the Amazon listing on the date we checked it; claims such as neutralizing or absorbing odors are the makers' own. Advice on why dogs smell, cleaning bedding and avoiding ammonia comes from the AKC, the ASPCA, VCA Animal Hospitals and Humane World for Animals [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. We read listings and sources; we did not use these products ourselves.

What vets and animal groups say about pet odors

When the smell is the dog. The AKC says secondary yeast or bacterial infections of the skin or ears are the most common medical reasons a dog smells, and that allergies often start that cycle. It says to see a vet if the odor comes with itching, changes in skin color, hair loss, crusting or red ears, and that a dog smelling stronger than usual is worth noting [1]. The ASPCA says ears and teeth are frequent sources of odor-causing bacteria and that if grooming doesn't fix a smell, a vet should look [2]. For breath, VCA says the most common cause of bad breath in dogs is periodontal disease from plaque and tartar, and it recommends dental exams at least twice a year [3].

Don't spray the dog. The AKC advises against covering dog odor with spray-on fragrances or perfumes, which can irritate the skin, and against home remedies such as borax, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar or bleach [1]. The products on this page are for floors, fabrics and rooms, not for your pet. On bathing, the AKC suggests about once a month [1], while the ASPCA says at least once every three months [2].

Wash the bed. A lot of pet smell lives in bedding. The AKC suggests washing a dog bed weekly, using a fragrance-free, pet-friendly detergent and a high-temperature cycle, and drying it fully because a damp bed encourages mold and mildew [4]. Humane World for Animals suggests adding a one-pound box of baking soda to the detergent for washable items and rewashing with an enzymatic cleaner if the odor stays [5].

Masking versus breaking down. The AKC says enzymatic pet cleaners break down odor-causing compounds rather than masking the smell [7], and Humane World for Animals recommends an enzymatic cleaner for waste odors [5]. Neither source endorses odor sprays as a fix for urine. Both the ASPCA and Humane World warn against ammonia-based cleaners, because urine contains ammonia and the smell can draw a pet back to the same spot [6][5]. Humane World also says to skip vinegar for the same reason [5].

1Best for Hard Floors

ANGRY ORANGE Pet Odor Eliminator, Orange Rush, 24 oz

Sold by Green Tree Products, ships from Amazon.

Angry Orange is the pick for the places accidents are easiest to clean: tile, hardwood, laminate and sealed concrete. The listing describes it for odors from dog and cat urine, feces and vomit on hard and sealed surfaces, and it does not list carpet. Wipe up the mess first, then use the spray on the spot.

The scent comes from natural orange oil, per the listing, and the brand says it is formulated without added parabens, sulfates or phthalates and is made in the USA. The listing says it is safe for homes with pets when used as directed; that is the maker's wording, so follow the label and keep pets off the floor until it dries.

Good to know

  • Made for hard, sealed floors
  • Orange-oil scent
  • Listing says no added parabens, sulfates or phthalates

Keep in mind

  • The listing does not name carpet as a surface, so don't use it as a carpet fix
  • First listed in April 2026, so there is little history on this version
  • It is not described as an enzyme cleaner; for set-in urine use one of our stain remover picks
2Best for Fabrics and Carpet

Zep Air and Fabric Odor Eliminator, 32 oz

Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.

For the soft things that hold smells, such as a rug, a couch, a dog blanket or the back seat of the car, Zep's spray is listed for carpets, rugs, upholstery, clothing, bedding and car interiors. The brand says it neutralizes airborne and in-carpet smells by absorbing odors rather than masking them; those are Zep's claims.

It is a general household product, not one made for pets, and it leaves a scent behind, per the listing. Use it for everyday smell in fabrics. For a urine spot in carpet, the AKC and Humane World for Animals point to blotting and an enzymatic cleaner instead [7][5].

Good to know

  • Listed for carpet, upholstery, bedding and cars
  • 32 oz bottle
  • Also used as an air spray

Keep in mind

  • Not pet-specific, and not described as an enzyme cleaner
  • It leaves a scent; the AKC warns against spraying fragrance on the dog itself [1]
  • "Absorbing rather than masking" is the brand's claim
3Best Passive Room Freshener

Arm & Hammer Pet Scents Odor Eliminator Gel Beads, Fresh Breeze, 12 oz

Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.

Some rooms just smell like animals: a laundry room with the litter box, a mudroom, a small apartment. These gel beads are baking-soda enhanced, per the listing, and sit in a 12-ounce jar you place in a room or near the litter box. There are no plugs, batteries or flame.

The lid is vented and spill-resistant, and the listing calls it pet-proof security. Even so, put the jar on a shelf where a curious dog or cat can't knock it over or chew it. It is scented (Fresh Breeze), so it adds a smell as well as working on one.

Good to know

  • Nothing to spray, plug in or light
  • Vented, spill-resistant lid
  • Fits near a litter box or in a small room

Keep in mind

  • Keep it out of reach of pets that chew; "pet-proof" is the brand's word
  • Scented, which some people and pets may not like
  • It freshens a room; it does not clean the source of a smell

What to look for

Check the surface

Hard-floor sprays and fabric sprays are labeled for different places. Angry Orange lists sealed hard surfaces; Zep lists fabrics and carpet.

Urine needs a different tool

For urine in carpet, the AKC and Humane World for Animals point to blotting and an enzymatic cleaner [7][5]. See how to get dog pee out of carpet.

No ammonia

The ASPCA and Humane World say ammonia-based cleaners can draw a pet back to the same spot [6][5].

Find the source

Wash bedding weekly, as the AKC suggests [4], and ask a vet if the smell comes from your dog [1].

The bottom line

  • Best for Hard Floors: Angry Orange: an orange-oil spray listed for tile, hardwood, laminate and sealed concrete.

  • Best Passive Room Freshener: Arm & Hammer Gel Beads: a vented jar for a room or the litter box corner.

Questions pet parents ask

Will an odor spray get dog pee smell out of carpet?

Usually not on its own. Urine that has soaked in needs to be blotted up and treated with an enzymatic cleaner, which the AKC says breaks down odor-causing compounds rather than masking them [7]. See our step-by-step guide and our enzyme cleaner picks.

Why does my dog smell bad even after a bath?

The AKC says yeast or bacterial infections of the skin or ears are the most common medical reasons, and to see a vet if odor comes with itching, hair loss, crusting or red ears [1]. The ASPCA adds that ears and teeth are frequent sources of smell [2].

What causes my dog's bad breath?

VCA says the most common cause is periodontal disease from plaque and tartar, and recommends dental exams at least twice a year [3]. An air freshener will not help.

Can I spray an odor eliminator on my dog?

No. These products are for floors, fabrics and rooms. The AKC advises against covering dog odor with spray-on fragrances or perfumes, which can irritate the skin [1].

Should I use vinegar or ammonia to clean pet smells?

Skip ammonia: the ASPCA and Humane World say it can attract a pet back to the spot [6][5]. Humane World also says to skip vinegar for the same reason [5], and the AKC lists vinegar among home remedies not to put on your dog [1].

How often should I wash my dog's bed?

The AKC suggests weekly, with a fragrance-free, pet-friendly detergent on a hot cycle, then drying it fully [4].
