Best Air Purifier for Pets: 3 Picks by Room Size
Pick an air purifier by the size of the room first. For a bedroom or small room, the Levoit Core 300-P has a smoke CADR of 143 and a 24 dB sleep mode with the display off. For a living room or open area, the Levoit Vital 200S-P has the highest CADR of our three, 250 for smoke. If you want the machine to react to the air, the Coway Airmega Mighty2 has a laser particle sensor and a smoke CADR of 240.
A purifier only filters what is floating in the air of one room. The EPA says filtration supplements, and does not replace, removing the source and ventilating with outdoor air [1], and much pet dander settles onto floors and furniture where no purifier can reach it [2]. That is why this guide sits next to our pet hair vacuum picks.

How we picked
We searched Amazon for air purifiers for pets, set aside sponsored results, and read the listings of the models that came up most often. We kept only HEPA-type purifiers that list CADR figures, so you can size them with the EPA's chart, and we left out ozone generators, which the EPA says to avoid [1]. We read listings and sources; we did not run the machines. We chose one for small rooms, one for large rooms and one with an air-quality sensor.
Every product detail comes from the Amazon listing on the date we checked it; room-size claims, filtration percentages and phrases about pets are the makers' own. Advice on sizing, settled dander and allergens comes from the EPA, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, Mayo Clinic and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America [1][2][3][4][5][6]. A purifier works best alongside cleaning, so see our vacuum picks, our pet hair remover guide and, for litter box smells, our odor-control litter picks.
CADR, room size and what a purifier cannot do
What CADR means. CADR stands for clean air delivery rate, the volume of filtered air a unit delivers, in cubic feet per minute (cfm). The EPA says portable air cleaners often reach a high CADR by using a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter, and that CADR applies to particles only, not gases or odors [1]. Our three list separate figures for smoke, dust and pollen; smoke is the lowest for each, so we use it to compare. The EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models [1].
Sizing to your room. Multiply the room's length by its width to get square feet, the EPA says, then compare that with the maximum room size on the package. Its minimum CADR for a room with an 8-foot ceiling is 65 cfm for 100 sq ft, 130 for 200, 195 for 300, 260 for 400, 325 for 500 and 390 for 600, and higher ceilings may need more [1]. ACAAI likewise says to choose a HEPA air cleaner whose CADR matches the room [3]. By that chart, the Levoit Core 300-P's smoke CADR of 143 clears the 200 sq ft row, while the Vital 200S-P (250) and the Coway Mighty2 (240) clear the 300 sq ft row but fall just short of 400 sq ft. The makers' own room claims run far larger, because they count air changes over time rather than the EPA minimum.
What a purifier cannot remove. An older EPA summary says larger particles settle quickly, so mechanical filters are not very good at completely removing them, and that portable units often lack the air delivery to capture large particles in typical rooms. Cat and dust mite allergens often travel on those larger particles, and walking and vacuuming throw them back into the air [2]. Dander that has settled on carpets, sofas and bedding stays there until you clean it, which is why AAFA says cat allergens can remain at high levels in a home for months [6]. A purifier is not a substitute for vacuuming and washing pet bedding.
What health groups say, and what they don't. Mayo Clinic says HEPA air purifiers "may help reduce airborne pet allergens" [5], and ACAAI says HEPA air cleaners run continuously in a bedroom or living room "can reduce allergen levels over time" [4]. AAFA suggests running a HEPA air cleaner at least four hours a day, especially in bedrooms [6]. We found no source saying a purifier treats pet allergy. Mayo says avoiding the animal is the first-line approach [5], ACAAI suggests keeping pets out of the bedroom [4], and if you have symptoms, talk to your doctor. The EPA also warns against ozone generators sold as air cleaners, and says some ionizers and similar devices can emit ozone, a lung irritant [1][2]; ACAAI agrees [3].
Levoit Core 300-P Air Purifier
Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.
A bedroom is where AAFA suggests running a HEPA air cleaner [6], and this is the size that suits one. The listing gives CADR figures of 143 cfm for smoke, 153 for dust and 167 for pollen, and says the figures are AHAM Verifide. By the EPA's chart, 143 clears the 130 cfm minimum for a 200 sq ft room [1].
For sleeping, Levoit lists a 24 dB Sleep Mode with the display off, a 2, 4, 6 or 8 hour timer and a check-filter indicator. It is 8.7 by 8.7 by 14.2 inches and weighs 7.9 pounds, so it fits on a nightstand or dresser. Levoit describes the filter as "HEPA-grade" in Sleep Mode under the IEST RP C001.7 standard, and says it captures 99.97% of 0.1 to 0.3 micron particles, including animal dander; those are the brand's figures.
Good to know
- Smoke CADR 143; clears the EPA minimum for 200 sq ft
- 24 dB Sleep Mode with display off
- Small: 7.9 lb, 8.7 x 8.7 x 14.2 in
Keep in mind
- Levoit's 1,073 sq ft claim is for one air change an hour; the EPA chart puts it near 200 sq ft
- "HEPA-grade" is stated for Sleep Mode under a specific standard; the 99.97% figure is the brand's
- Levoit says to use official Levoit filters; 120V US only
LEVOIT Vital 200S-P Smart Air Purifier
Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.
A living room or open kitchen needs more air movement than a bedroom unit can give. The Vital 200S-P lists CADR figures of 250 cfm for smoke, 254 for dust and 289 for pollen, AHAM Verifide per the listing, the highest of our three in every column. By the EPA's chart that clears the 195 cfm minimum for a 300 sq ft room and is close to the 260 needed for 400 sq ft [1].
Levoit says it has an extra U-shaped air inlet meant for pet hair, which is the brand's description. It is 14.96 by 8.66 by 19.69 inches and weighs 13.2 pounds, so plan a floor spot rather than a shelf. It has been on Amazon since December 2022.
Good to know
- Highest CADR here in smoke, dust and pollen
- Extra U-shaped inlet for pet hair, per Levoit
- On the market since late 2022
Keep in mind
- The "up to 1875 sq ft" claim is far beyond what the EPA chart supports for a CADR of 250
- The listing's "designed for allergy groups" line is marketing, not a medical claim
- At 13.2 lb and nearly 20 in tall, it is a floor unit
COWAY Airmega Mighty2 Air Purifier (AP-1512N)
Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.
The Mighty2 has a laser particle sensor that reads PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 and shows the result as a color, so you can see when particles in the air rise, for example while someone vacuums. The listing gives Smart, Eco and Sleep modes, and says it runs as quietly as 19 dB.
Coway lists CADR figures of 242 for dust, 240 for smoke and 249 for pollen, nearly level with the Vital 200S-P. Filtration is three stages: a washable pre-filter, which is the part that catches pet hair, and a combined HEPA and activated carbon filter Coway calls Max2. A filter-life display tells you when to replace it, and the listing gives a 3-year limited warranty. It is 9.3 by 16.9 by 17.9 inches and 15.2 pounds.
Good to know
- Laser particle sensor with a color indicator
- Washable pre-filter plus HEPA and carbon
- 3-year limited warranty, per the listing
Keep in mind
- A new model, first available in March 2026, so it has a short track record
- Coway's 900 sq ft in 30 minutes claim is its own; the EPA chart puts a 240 CADR near 300 to 400 sq ft
- The 99.97% figure for particles down to 0.3 microns, including pet dander, is a brand claim

What to look for
CADR matched to your room
Measure length times width. The EPA minimum for an 8-ft ceiling is 130 cfm for 200 sq ft, 195 for 300 and 260 for 400; higher ceilings need more [1].
A true HEPA-type filter
ACAAI says HEPA filters can remove up to 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns in size [3]. Read the filter wording on the listing closely.
No ozone
Skip ozone generators, and check whether an ionizer or similar feature makes ozone; the EPA and ACAAI call ozone a lung irritant [1][3].
Noise and filter upkeep
AAFA suggests running a HEPA air cleaner at least four hours a day [6], so check the sleep-mode noise level and how often the filters need replacing.
The bottom line
- Best for Bedrooms and Small Rooms: The Levoit Core 300-P: smoke CADR 143, quiet sleep mode, small enough for a nightstand.
- Best for Large Rooms: The Levoit Vital 200S-P has the highest CADR of our three, 250 for smoke.
- Best with Air Quality Sensor: The Coway Airmega Mighty2 reads particles with a laser sensor and shows air quality as a color.
Questions pet parents ask
Do air purifiers help with pet dander?
They can lower the amount floating in the air of one room. Mayo Clinic says HEPA purifiers "may help reduce airborne pet allergens" [5], and ACAAI says they can reduce allergen levels over time when run continuously [4]. They do not remove dander that has settled on carpet, furniture and bedding [2], and we found no source saying a purifier treats allergies.
What size air purifier do I need?
Multiply the room's length by its width, then check the CADR. The EPA minimum for an 8-foot ceiling is 65 cfm per 100 sq ft: 130 for 200 sq ft, 195 for 300, 260 for 400, 325 for 500 and 390 for 600 [1]. Go higher for tall ceilings.
Why are the makers' room sizes so much larger than the EPA chart?
The makers count how many times the unit cycles a room's air per hour. Levoit, for example, says the Core 300-P changes the air in a 1,073 sq ft room once an hour but a 222 sq ft room 4.8 times an hour. The EPA chart gives a minimum CADR per room size [1], which is the more cautious way to size.
Will an air purifier get rid of pet odors?
Not reliably. The EPA says CADR applies to particles only [1]. The Coway Mighty2 includes an activated carbon layer, but for odors the bigger fix is cleaning the source; see our pet odor eliminator guide.
Are ionizers or ozone air purifiers safe with pets?
Where should I put an air purifier if I have pets?
