Best Vacuum for Pet Hair: Upright, HEPA and Stick Picks

A cordless stick vacuum and a small dog on a light floor

For a house with a shedding dog or cat, the Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet is an upright built around pet hair, with a Triple Action brush roll and pet tools for upholstery. If anyone at home is sensitive to dander, the Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV360 has a HEPA filter and a pod that lifts off for stairs and sofas. For quick daily pickups, the Shark Rocket Pet Plus is a corded stick of about 8.6 pounds that converts to a handheld.

The filter is the main difference between them. Allergy groups recommend a vacuum with a HEPA filter for homes with pets [1][2], and of these three only the Shark Navigator lists one. The Bissell lists a disk filter and the Rocket a foam filter, so they are better matched to hair and debris than to fine dust.

How we picked

We searched Amazon for vacuums for pet hair, set aside sponsored results, and read the listings of the models that came up most often. We chose three different formats: a full-size upright, an upright with a HEPA filter and a detachable pod, and a light stick. We read listings and sources; we did not run the vacuums ourselves. For fur on clothes and furniture between vacuuming, see our pet hair remover picks, and for dander in the air, our air purifier guide.

Every product detail comes from the Amazon listing on the date we checked it; phrases such as scatter-free and Anti-Allergen Complete Seal are the makers' own. Advice on dander, HEPA filters and shedding comes from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, Mayo Clinic, the AKC and the ASPCA [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Less hair on the floor starts with the dog, so our cat brush guide and our dog shampoo picks are worth a look too.

What allergy groups say about vacuuming

It is the dander, not the fur. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) says pet allergies are reactions to proteins in dander (dead skin), saliva and urine, not fur itself, but fur collects dander and can carry dust mites, mold and pollen. It adds that cat allergens are especially sticky, clinging to carpets, fabric furniture and clothing and staying at high levels for months [1].

Why HEPA comes up. AAFA suggests vacuuming fabric furniture and carpets weekly with a HEPA-filter vacuum [1]. The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) also suggests a HEPA-filter vacuum to reduce dust, pet dander and other allergens [2], and says regular use of a high-efficiency or central vacuum can reduce allergen levels [3]. Mayo Clinic says HEPA vacuum bags may cut the dander stirred up by cleaning, and suggests considering hard flooring in place of wall-to-wall carpet [4]. We didn't find any of these groups endorsing a vacuum type, such as upright, stick or robot, beyond the HEPA filter.

Vacuuming stirs things up. AAFA says dusting or vacuuming can put settled allergens back into the air, and suggests wearing a mask and gloves while cleaning [1]. ACAAI says vacuuming stirs up dust that takes a couple of hours to settle [2], so if someone at home is sensitive, it makes sense to vacuum when they can be elsewhere for a while.

Less hair to pick up. The AKC says shedding is natural and coat type is the biggest factor, with thick double-coated dogs such as Golden Retrievers more likely to shed year-round; heavy shedders may need brushing several times a week, or daily in peak periods [5]. The ASPCA says regular brushing reduces the amount of hair in your home [6]. For dog beds, the AKC suggests vacuuming the surface, crevices and sides with a pet-hair vacuum or hair remover tool before and between washes [7].

1Best Overall Upright

Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet Upright Vacuum, 2252

Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.

This is a full-size upright aimed squarely at pet hair. Bissell says its Triple Action brush roll loosens and lifts embedded pet hair from carpet, and the listing describes edge-to-edge suction along baseboards, where fur tends to collect. Swivel steering helps it turn around furniture legs.

It is listed for carpet, upholstery and hard floors. Bissell describes "scatter-free technology" for hard floors, meant to keep debris from being flung ahead of the head, and it comes with specialized pet tools for sofas and chairs. The listing also says purchases support the BISSELL Pet Foundation.

Good to know

  • Triple Action brush roll for embedded hair, per the listing
  • Swivel steering and edge-to-edge suction
  • Pet upholstery tools included

Keep in mind

  • The listing gives a disk filter, not HEPA, which AAFA and ACAAI recommend for allergens
  • We couldn't find a weight or dust-cup size on the listing
  • "Scatter-free" is Bissell's description, not a measured result
2Best with HEPA and Lift-Away

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Upright Vacuum with HEPA Filter, NV360

Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.

If a HEPA filter matters to you, this is the one of our three that lists it. Shark pairs the HEPA filter with what it calls Anti-Allergen Complete Seal, and the listing's own footnote says "allergens" here refers to non-living matter. The filter is washable: Shark says rinse it until the water runs clear and air dry it for 24 hours, and not to put it in a dishwasher or washing machine.

The pod lifts away from the base, so you can carry the motor and canister up stairs or to the sofa with the included upholstery and crevice tools. A brushroll shutoff switch is meant for hard floors. It is bagless and corded, with a 0.9-quart dust cup, and weighs 15.96 pounds.

Good to know

  • HEPA filter, washable per the listing
  • Lift-away pod for stairs and furniture
  • Brushroll shutoff for hard floors

Keep in mind

  • At 15.96 lb it is the heaviest of the three to carry upstairs
  • Corded, so you will be moving the plug between rooms
  • "Anti-Allergen" is Shark's feature name; the listing footnote limits it to non-living matter
3Best Lightweight Stick

Shark Rocket Pet Plus Corded Stick Vacuum, HV322

Ships from and sold by Amazon.com.

Fur builds up fast in hallways, around food bowls and on stairs, and a stick you can grab in seconds gets used more often. The Rocket Pet Plus weighs about 8.6 pounds per the spec and converts to a handheld for stairs, furniture and the car. Because it is corded, there is no battery to charge.

Shark includes a Pet Multi-Tool and a crevice tool. The floor nozzle is low profile with LED headlights for under furniture, and it has swivel steering. It is bagless with a 0.68-quart dust cup, and the spec lists a foam filter.

Good to know

  • About 8.6 lb; converts to a handheld
  • Corded, so no charging
  • LED headlights and a low-profile nozzle

Keep in mind

  • Foam filter, not HEPA
  • The 0.68-qt dust cup fills faster than the Navigator's 0.9 qt
  • The cord limits its reach, unlike a battery stick

What to look for

Filter

If anyone at home has pet allergies, AAFA and ACAAI point to a HEPA-filter vacuum [1][2]. For hair and litter alone, any of these three filters can do the job.

Brush roll and tools

Embedded hair in carpet needs a brush roll; sofas and stairs need an upholstery or pet tool. Check both are included.

Weight and carrying

Think about stairs. A light stick or a lift-away pod is easier to carry than a full upright.

Hard floors

On hard floors, a brushroll shutoff or a hard-floor setting can help keep hair from being pushed around.

The bottom line

  • Best Overall Upright: The Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet: a Triple Action brush roll and pet tools, built around pet hair.
  • Best with HEPA and Lift-Away: The Shark Navigator NV360 is the HEPA pick, with a pod that lifts off for stairs and sofas.
  • Best Lightweight Stick: The Shark Rocket Pet Plus is about 8.6 pounds and turns into a handheld for quick pickups.

Questions pet parents ask

Do I need a HEPA vacuum if I have pets?

For hair alone, not necessarily. For allergens, AAFA suggests vacuuming carpets and fabric furniture weekly with a HEPA-filter vacuum [1], and ACAAI also suggests a HEPA-filter vacuum [2]. Of our picks, only the Shark Navigator NV360 lists a HEPA filter.

How often should I vacuum with a dog or cat?

AAFA says weekly for carpets and fabric furniture [1]. We didn't find another authority giving a set schedule; many owners of heavy shedders vacuum more often during spring and fall.

Does vacuuming stir up pet dander?

Yes, for a while. AAFA says vacuuming can put settled allergens back in the air and suggests a mask and gloves [1]; ACAAI says the dust takes a couple of hours to settle [2].

Is an upright or a stick vacuum better for pet hair?

We didn't find an allergy group or vet source that prefers one type; their advice is about the HEPA filter. An upright usually suits whole-house carpet cleaning, and a light stick suits quick daily pickups. Many pet owners keep one of each.

How can I cut down on hair before I vacuum?

Brush your pet. The ASPCA says regular brushing reduces the amount of hair in your home [6], and the AKC says heavy shedders may need brushing several times a week or daily in peak periods [5].

How do I vacuum a dog bed?

The AKC suggests vacuuming the surface, crevices and sides with a pet-hair vacuum or hair remover tool before and between washes [7]. A handheld like the Rocket Pet Plus or the Navigator's upholstery tool reaches the seams.
