How we picked
We searched Amazon for dog shampoo and unscented dog shampoo and read the top organic results. We left out medicated shampoos, which should be used as your vet directs [4], and flea-and-tick shampoos, and we skipped listings with high scores from only a few ratings.

What vets and other sources say about bathing dogs
How often? There's no single rule. VCA says most dogs need an occasional bath when dirty or smelly, and that non-shedding breeds with no health issues typically need one every 6 to 8 weeks [1]. The ASPCA's advice varies by page: one says most dogs don't need more than a few baths a year [3], another says to bathe at least once every three months [2]. Groomers quoted by the AKC caution that bathing double-coated breeds too often could strip oil from the skin [5].
Which shampoo? One made for dogs [1]. The ASPCA puts it more gently: pet shampoo is best, and human shampoos aren't toxic but may contain fragrances or other things that irritate [2].
How? Rinse thoroughly. VCA says shampoo must be rinsed out completely [1], and the ASPCA warns dirt sticks to soap left in the coat. It also suggests about 3 to 4 inches of lukewarm water, combing or cutting out mats first, and drying your dog well [2][3].
Skin problems are a vet question. Medicated shampoos should be used as your vet directs, often with a set contact time [4]. We also found no good evidence that oatmeal shampoos relieve itching, so we don't make that claim.

The ASPCA warns that human shampoos may contain fragrances that can irritate a dog [2]. If you'd rather avoid fragrance altogether, this one is listed as fragrance-free. The listing describes a soap-free, pH-balanced formula with coconut-based cleansers and aloe vera, and says it has no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, phosphates or dyes.
It has the same 4.7 rating as the Wahl, and the listing says earthbath is certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny. The bottle is 16 ounces.

For a big dog, or several dogs, a half-gallon bottle goes a long way. The listing says Wahl's formula is concentrated, so you use less, and that it cleans, conditions, detangles and moisturizes in one step.
It's pH balanced and free of alcohol, parabens and PEG-80, per the listing, and made in the USA. The description echoes VCA and ASPCA advice: rinse thoroughly and dry your dog's coat [1][2].

For long or double coats, a shampoo with conditioner built in can make brushing out easier. The listing says this one detangles and loosens undercoat hair. It comes in a 12-ounce pump bottle and is sulfate- and paraben-free.
