Best Dog Sweaters for Small, Medium and Large Dogs

A small dog wearing a blue sweater and hat

A sweater is the light layer for cool days, not a substitute for an insulated coat in snow. For small dogs, the Dxhycc knitted sweater is a stretchy acrylic pullover with a heart pattern. For big dogs with wide chests, the Spark Paws hoodie is a fleece-lined stretch sweatshirt that runs up to 5XL. For a medium dog that just needs something simple, the Blaoicni plaid hoodie is a plain polyester fleece with a leash hole.

The AKC puts lightweight jackets and sweaters in the first-cool-days category and insulated jackets in the snow-and-extreme-cold category [1]. The dogs most likely to need a layer are small, short-coated, clipped, lean or short-legged dogs, plus puppies and seniors [1]; the ASPCA says long-haired dogs don't need one [2].

How we picked

We searched Amazon for dog sweaters, set aside sponsored results, and read the listings that came up most often. We wanted one sweater for each common body: a knit for small dogs, a stretch hoodie cut for broad chests, and a simple fleece hoodie for medium dogs. Insulated and waterproof coats are a different job, covered in our dog winter coat guide.

Every product detail comes from the Amazon listing on the day we checked it; words like stretchy or colorfast are the makers'. Advice on who needs a sweater, keeping it dry and washing it comes from the AKC, ASPCA and AVMA [1][2][3]. Measure before ordering with our measuring guide, and if your dog's sweater gets muddy, our dog shampoo picks cover the dog, if not the sweater.

Sweater or coat: what the AKC, ASPCA and AVMA say

Sweater versus coat. The AKC describes lightweight jackets as the layer for the first cool days of the season, and insulated jackets as the layer for snow and extreme cold [1]. Spark Paws says the same of its own hoodie: it is an everyday layer, and the listing says to wear a lined coat over it in deep cold. The ASPCA describes the shape to look for in a sweater or coat for a short-haired dog: a high collar or turtleneck, covering from the base of the tail to the belly [2].

Who needs one. The AKC lists small and toy breeds, hairless breeds, clipped or shaved dogs, short-legged dogs, lean short-coated dogs, high-energy short-coated sporting dogs, puppies, seniors and dogs with chronic conditions such as arthritis as likely to benefit, and says thick-coated breeds are generally well protected [1]. The ASPCA adds that long-haired dogs don't need a sweater and should not be shaved down in winter [2]. The AVMA says to consider a sweater or coat for short-coated dogs or any dog that seems bothered by cold [3].

Keep it dry. A wet sweater makes a dog colder, not warmer. The AVMA suggests keeping several on hand so each outing starts with a dry one [3], and the ASPCA says to towel-dry pets when they come in [2]. The AVMA also lists shivering, whining, slowing down and looking for warm places as signs a dog is too cold; bring it inside and call a vet if you suspect hypothermia [3].

Wash it. The AKC says to wash dog coats regularly, because they collect hair and dander and can harbor bacteria, especially if stored damp [1]. It lists machine-washable fabric among the features to look for [1]. Of our three picks, Spark Paws and Blaoicni list machine washing; the Dxhycc listing says nothing about washing.

1Best Knit Sweater for Small Dogs

Dxhycc Dog Knitted Sweater, Heart Pattern

Sold by Wayuer, ships from Amazon.

Small and toy breeds lose body heat fast, the AKC says [1], and this is the classic answer: a sleeveless acrylic knit pullover the listing calls stretchy and breathable. It is sold for small dogs and cats only; the listing names Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Pugs, Maltese, Shih Tzus, Poodles, mini Dachshunds and Maltipoos, and says it is not suitable for large dogs.

Size S measures a 9.8-inch back, 11.8-inch chest girth and 8.3-inch neck girth, per the listing, which also warns that sizes vary between makers and to use its own chart. The whole thing weighs about 2 ounces.

Good to know

  • Stretchy knit, per the listing
  • Sleeveless pullover, easy to put on
  • Sized with back, chest and neck numbers

Keep in mind

  • Small dogs and cats only; the listing says not for large dogs
  • No washing instructions on the listing
  • No leash hole, so a harness goes over the top
2Best for Large and Broad-Chested Dogs

Spark Paws Dog Hoodie, Dog Sweater Sweatshirt for Large Dogs

Sold by Spark Paws, ships from Amazon.

Most dog sweaters stop well short of a Pit Bull's chest. Spark Paws cuts this hoodie for broad chests, naming French Bulldogs, Pit Bulls, English Bulldogs and Labradors, and sells it in eight sizes from Small to 5XL. The fabric is 67 percent polyester, 30 percent cotton and 3 percent spandex, with a fleece lining inside a 4-way stretch shell.

It pulls on with no closures, has a built-in leash opening, and machine washes cold with line drying, per the listing. Spark Paws is honest about what it is: an everyday layer, not waterproof, and the listing says to wear a lined coat over it in deep cold. Measure chest girth and size up if between sizes, the listing says, which matches the AKC's advice [4].

Good to know

  • Eight sizes, cut for broad chests
  • Built-in leash opening
  • Machine wash cold, line dry

Keep in mind

  • Not waterproof, per the listing
  • Pull-on with no closures, so it has to go over the head
  • For deep cold the listing itself says to add a coat over it
3Best Simple Fleece Hoodie for Medium Dogs

Blaoicni Plaid Dog Hoodie Sweatshirt Sweater for Medium Dogs

Sold by The Creativehome, ships from Amazon.

Sometimes the brief is just a warm, washable layer for a medium dog. The Blaoicni is 100 percent polyester fleece in a red plaid, with a hood and a leash hole in the back. The listing says it is machine washable and colorfast.

Size M is listed at a 13.2-inch neck girth, 22-inch chest girth and 16-inch back length. The listing is thin on detail beyond that, so we can't tell you about closures or stretch; measure your dog against those three numbers before ordering.

Good to know

  • Machine washable, per the listing
  • Leash hole in the back
  • Clear neck, chest and back measurements for size M

Keep in mind

  • The listing bullets are thin; closures and stretch are not described
  • Fleece only, with no shell; not for wet weather
  • Sized for medium dogs; check the chart for other sizes

What to look for

Coverage

The ASPCA suggests a high collar or turtleneck and coverage from the base of the tail to the belly for short-haired dogs [2].

Fit by chest girth

Measure the widest part of the chest, back length and neck, and compare with each brand's chart; the AKC says chest girth is usually the most important number and to size up if between sizes [4]. See how to measure a dog for a coat.

A leash opening

If your dog wears a harness, an opening saves taking the sweater off. The Spark Paws and Blaoicni have one; the Dxhycc does not.

Washable fabric

The AKC says to wash dog clothing regularly [1]. Check the listing for washing instructions; two of our three have them.

The bottom line

  • Best Knit Sweater for Small Dogs: The Dxhycc knitted sweater: a stretchy acrylic pullover sized for small dogs and cats.
  • Best for Large and Broad-Chested Dogs: The Spark Paws hoodie: fleece-lined stretch fabric, eight sizes to 5XL, machine washable.
  • Best Simple Fleece Hoodie for Medium Dogs: The Blaoicni plaid hoodie: plain polyester fleece with a leash hole.

Questions pet parents ask

Does my dog need a sweater or a coat?

For the first cool days, the AKC says a lightweight layer is enough; for snow and extreme cold it recommends an insulated jacket [1]. If you need the latter, see our winter coat guide.

Which dogs should wear a sweater?

The AKC lists small and toy breeds, hairless and clipped dogs, short-legged dogs, lean short-coated dogs, puppies, seniors and dogs with chronic conditions [1]. The ASPCA says long-haired dogs don't need one and should not be shaved in winter [2].

How should a dog sweater fit?

The AKC says a dog should be able to walk, run and play comfortably, and the garment should not be so loose it could tangle [1]. Measure chest girth, back length and neck girth and follow the brand's chart [4].

Can my dog wear a wet sweater?

Better not. The AVMA says a wet garment makes a dog colder and suggests keeping several so each outing starts dry [3]. Towel-dry your dog when it comes in, the ASPCA says [2].

How often should I wash a dog sweater?

Regularly, the AKC says, because dog clothing collects hair and dander and can harbor bacteria, especially if stored damp [1]. Spark Paws says machine wash cold and line dry; Blaoicni says machine washable; Dxhycc gives no instructions.

Can a dog wear a sweater indoors all day?

The AVMA says to give pets several sleeping spots so they can move toward more or less warmth [3], which suggests letting the dog choose. We'd take the sweater off indoors unless your vet suggests otherwise.
